This year, on January 1st, I made a resolution to myself. I didn’t tell anyone that I was doing this. My resolution was to go outside my comfort zone.

Boy, have I ever.

This year I’ve become more involved in my church. I found my hands typing a reply in late May to someone looking for a co-leader for a group study. My head was saying no, but, my hands were typing “I’ll help if you’ll have me!” That changed so many things.

The class was S.H.A.P.E.

SHAPE stands for Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experience. It’s a six week long class. The first week is just to get to know everyone and then the next five weeks go through each letter. If you ever get to do this group study, take it. It will teach you so much about yourself.

During this class I found myself taking a test for my gifts. I have strong FAITH, which I already knew, but it was good to see it in print.

S.H.A.P.E. helped me take the plunge. I found myself texting the leader of Vacation Bible School at my church, to help out with VBS by taking photos. I seriously just picked up my phone while she was speaking, in a meeting, about needing a volunteer. I took photos of the kids doing activities and singing all week. It was nice to do that again. I think it really sparked something in my soul. I remember taking photos of the kids as they accepted Christ also. It was amazing.

S.H.A.P.E. helped me take the plunge. I’ve wanted to volunteer for the Catherine Foundation, I’ve taken the brochure home three or four times, never contacted anyone. I finally contacted my friend that is the head of the organization and she put me in touch with the volunteer coordinator. This is a great organization that helps educate single mothers and also helps with diapers and clothing for the baby. I had to go through a few weeks of waiting while they checked out my references, etc. I’ve been helping where needed. I just started helping sort the baby things and making layettes. I really like organizing so that brings me joy while helping out. I like the people that volunteer and work there, everyone has been really nice. It makes my heart happy and my spirit is joyful! I also helped hand out brochures and answer questions at an event. That was WAY out of my comfort zone, but, I did it!

If you want to volunteer near you, do it. I promise that you will have a happy spirit and you will expand your FAITH and your life will be better because of it. If you would like to donate to the organization that I volunteer for, you can click this link and read all about it.

S.H.A.P.E. helped me take the plunge. I volunteer at Lifepoint now, helping to greet people for a service on Sunday mornings. This is also way out of my comfort zone. I started doing that a few months ago. I am not always comfortable with a lot of people around, so I help out by serving at the earliest service, so it’s not super crowded.

So far it’s been an amazing year. I’ve put myself in many different situations that I normally wouldn’t have experienced.

I joined a gym again. I found myself running more and more and I needed to counterbalance that with actual strength training. So, at least once a week I go to the gym and work on the weights. I want to try spin, yoga, kick boxing as well as Krav Maga, which my gym offers for classes. I find that I don’t always talk to people at the gym, but, at least I’m there with other people. I’m putting myself out there. Going out of my comfort zone.

I went on a field trip with my granddaughter. That was the first field trip I’ve been on since my girls were in school, so quite a while ago! It was fun, we went to the US Military Academy and Annapolis. I’d like to go back and see more of the area.

I’m praying more. I really am. I sit and read the Bible for about 10 minutes every morning. I always pray before I travel and before my husband travels to and from work. I find that my spirit is very happy and buoyant after church. I am more in touch with my spirit this year than I have been in a long, long time.

From my Facebook post on January 1, 2017: Wow, hard to believe it’s been 5 years. Wow. I feel that my faith in God has been tested so much, especially since mid-2015. I have found roadblocks where they shouldn’t be. I just keep the faith and know that God has it covered. 2017 will be a great year for me, I can feel it.

The 5 years mentioned above is how long it’s been since I was baptized. In 2015 I was in a car accident. Roadblocks are always around me, I just keep the FAITH and things work out the way they are supposed to work out.

That was my year of changes. Next year will have more changes, but, with God on my side, I’m ready. Bring it on.

End of the summer.

Well, it’s been forever since I’ve posted anything here.

I’ve been walking vs. running. I cancelled my gym membership a few weeks ago. I have an elliptical as well as weights here at home, so, I’ve been doing that instead. I don’t know the last time I did any yoga, but, once school starts at the end of the month, I’ll get back into it.

Gym classes

I’ve been trying out some classes at the gym over the past few weeks. Right now I do a Body Works class on Monday’s and Yoga on Wednesday’s.

Body Works + Abs is a workout with hand weights, floor work and you will feel it the next day. I guess I didn’t push myself too hard, just enough as I really only felt it in my abs. Which is where I need it so I can wear my bikini this summer.

Yoga was really the same poses I do at home and it was nice to have a class to go to.

It was cool to talk to other people too.

Each class is 55 minutes.

Since the Zombie run isn’t until Sunday, I thought I would get some training in during this final week. It’s also my birthday week! I will be 51 on Friday October 16th.

Weekly Run Total: 3.50 miles

Average Pace: 12:56

Tuesday – Yoga and Elliptical

This felt really good. It stretched my muscles out and I did 50 minutes on the elliptical. I managed to work it into my day. I did yoga and some crunches as well as other floor exercises before going onto the elliptical. I watched two Mindy Projects and one Modern Family while working out. 🙂

Wednesday – Run – 1.37 miles

I went and did a local street run today. I wanted to run at least a mile, maybe a little more and that’s what I ended up doing too! It was easy, even with some hills in there.

See the orange and green bracelet? My grand-daughter made that for me to wear on Sunday. 🙂

Friday – Run – 2.13 Miles

This was my birthday run! What a pretty day for a run!

For some reason my watch didn’t pull down the same time as my Runtastic. But, I know I did over 2 miles. 🙂

And I received a nice little surprise!

I’m ready for the Zombie 5K on Sunday! I plan on running the entire thing and I want to get in at around 39-40 minutes.

Saturday – Yoga – Foam Rolling

This felt really good and I am ready for tomorrow!

We are heading to another town to get hubby a new pair of running shoes.

Later Saturday:

Not only did hubby get new Brooks shoes but socks too! I bought a bib belt, socks and gloves. The running store was really stocked and filled with nice and knowledgable people!

Training Week 10

I started this week with only 12 days to go until The Color Run!

Weekly Run Total: 7.33 miles – *2.63 more miles than last week!*

Average Pace: 13:20

Monday – Run

I decided to run the route I ran last Monday, again. This time I was alone, but, the temperature was amazingly low and I had no issues with getting overheated at all. I also broke a PR of under 14 minute mile! I ran the first part all the way, no walking. So that was amazing. After my turn around point, I still kept running, then, I hit the 20 minute mark wall. I was at a 6 minute wall when I started weeks ago, so, this is a great improvement. Running the entire first leg  helped with my minute mile pace! I ended up walking twice on the way back. No biggie though, it’s a lot better than I was doing and I’m happy and proud of my progress over the past 10 weeks.

Tuesday – Yoga and Elliptical

I did 45 minutes – 1.40 miles on the elliptical today! I actually burned more calories this time than I did the past few times. I have been putting the climb percentage up higher and higher each time. Today I went to 40% for the majority of the time. Yoga before and after felt really good. I did notice that one of my legs felt weird while on the elliptical but as of this evening it feels fine.

Wednesday – Run

Today the most amazing thing happened. The 20 minute wall disappeared! I didn’t even see the 20 minute mark on my watch at all. I just ran. AND I improved my time as you can see! I ran 2 miles without stopping to walk, I just slowed down instead. I re-evaluated how I felt at different landmarks on the trail, to see if I needed to slow down or speed up. I ended up walking the last part, but, that’s okay. I ran 2 miles without stopping! I also saw a pretty flower on my cool down walk and had to take a photo. All in all a great morning run. And to think this morning when I woke up I didn’t even want to run.

Thursday – Rest Day

Hubby had some free subscriptions so I had him get one to Runner’s World for me. Read these today.

Saturday – Run

I did a two mile run today with my hubby. We went to the same trail we ran a couple of weeks ago. I think I did much better, I was a little tired afterwards and ended up getting a headache even after getting food. I took some Excedrin and took a nap. Much better afterwards! I think I have a cold or something as I didn’t sleep very well last night. I didn’t want to get up this morning to run, but, I did run and I’m glad I did too. He ran another mile after our run together. Yes, those are Ohio State socks! I need to remember to stop Runtastic and my Garmin after I’m done running so that my cool down walk doesn’t interfere with my mile time.

This was the first time wearing these headphones too. I’m going to review them in a couple of weeks after I really test them out.

Only 8 more days until The Color Run! I can honestly say that I will be fine running it and I’m going to have SO MUCH FUN running this race too!
